Following on from the work with Health Education England – North, Central and East London, we were recommended to Barts Health for the provision of a health coaching training with health professionals across the Trust. This work began in the summer 2017 and has extended into a multi-year programme, currently funded until summer 2020. It is part of Bart’s ‘Healthy Conversations’ initiative, which aims to improve the quality of conversations between practitioners, patients and colleagues.
So far, the programme has included:
- Half day sessions to over two thousand health professionals from across the Trust to cover the core Coaching for Health skills to use with patients and clients.
- A schedule of the longer 2 day Coaching for Health programmes, which began in January 2018, for health professionals across the Trust, including community settings.
- Targeting of prioritised audiences, e.g. nurses working in surgical care and with elderly patients, for more in depth skills training.
- Supporting an entire team working with parents of children with particular developmental needs, to embed a coaching approach across their work. This has involved training the entire team in Coaching for Health, as well as working to develop an evaluation measure for use with parents which assesses their perceived confidence in supporting their child’s development.
Feedback from participants:

“It has made a massive impact, with my patient making useful decisions about their care and following through, and this has taken a great burden off my work load and made the journey easy for both of us.”
